Breakout Discussion: “The Power of The Tongue”

In order to establish this to be a year of discipline for our church, we are intentional to anchor ourselves in scripture concerning what God says about discipline, as well as the definition of discipline so that we may prepare to build upon this foundation. First, we will read our foundation verse in Hebrews 12:11. Then we will review a clear definition of discipline along with associated words before we discuss the following questions below. So let’s begin.

Hebrews 12:11 NLT

No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening-it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

The Definition of Discipline which is, the practice of training ourselves to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. (Other related words are: control, regulation, direction, order, authority, rule, strictness, a firm hand, routine, regimen, training, teaching, instruction, drilling, exercise, use of punishment.)

Read Proverbs 18:20-21, and answer the questions below.

Proverbs 18:20-21 KJV

A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. [21] Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Q1: Post some common statements we say or have heard others say that have the power of death. (For ex: “I’m never going to …” I can’t …” “There’s no point in me trying to …” “I have to …” “I don’t care about …”)

Q2: When we say things like this, according to scripture, what’s really happening? (Ref: Proverbs 18:20-21)

Q3: There is a “pain” we often experience when we bridle our tongue. How would you describe that “pain” or “discomfort”?

Q4: Because death and life are both in the power of our tongue, what righteous advice would you give someone who may be going thru a difficult time right now, but yet has an expectation for better in their personal life?”
